Your best new client comes through your current one
Almost every business owner knows referrals bring the best clients. Almost nobody has a system for them. It is left to chance and goodwill, while it is the cheapest and most reliable channel you have.
Satisfied is not the same as active
A satisfied client recommends you when the subject happens to come up. That happens a few times a year, if you are lucky. The problem is not that clients do not want to recommend you. The problem is that nobody asks them, and they do not know who exactly is a good fit for you.
Look at where your best clients of the past year came from. For most service businesses a large share came through someone they already knew. Meanwhile almost the entire marketing budget goes to people who have never spoken to you. That is an odd split once you think about it.
Ask at the right moment
Every project has a moment when the client is happiest. Usually not at the end, but just after the first visible result: the site going live, the first overview that adds up, the problem that is finally gone. That is the moment to ask. Not for a general review, but specifically: do you know anyone struggling with the same thing?
Make that question a fixed step, not an impulse. Decide after which milestone it gets asked and by whom. And make it easy for the client: a short text they can forward, a link to a page explaining what you do. The less they have to put into words themselves, the more likely it is to happen.
Close the loop
Someone who refers a person to you wants to know what came of it. Tell them, even if nothing did. A short message saying you had the conversation and appreciate it makes sure the next referral comes too. Forget it, and the first one was also the last.
And keep track of where your clients come from. Not in a complex report, just one field in your CRM: through whom or through which channel. After six months you see in black and white which clients bring in new clients, and where your attention pays off most.
